The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

This story is about the relationship between a tree and a boy. The tree expresses its love for the little boy by giving . I find that this love expression draws resemblance to some sort of unconditional parental love for their child. It is a moving and touching story.
It also offers glimpses of the seasons of life that a person goes through, providing young minds an opportunity to anticipate the needs one will meet as they grow older. The book also opens up conversational possibilities to discuss with child deeper on issues of love and gratitude. Also explore the themes on the gift of giving and the acceptance of another’s capacity to reciprocate.

Its illustration in simple black lined drawing fixed on just one setting of where the tree grew helps to put a constant to the pages so that the reader’s eyes maybe drawn to the varying details of the leaves, branches and boy’s interaction, thus giving life to the tree. A very clever, intentional and approach used by Silverstein to animate the tree. As such some of the pages do feel like a flip page book, which add on to the animated dimension of the tree.

Truly a classic book to read.
