This is a super delightful story of the monster “Nian” with a slight twist. The story accords “Nian” to be a little monster once created from the cumulative loneliness in the winter air and lived in the mountain top. In the coldest of the winter, he would feel extremely lonely and angry and thus descend to terrify those who are or soon-to- be- lonely soul. Therefore, people came up with many practices to drive him away. He retreated for a long while. But then he reappeared again to target on those lonely. “Nian” would then ‘capture’ the lonely, ‘sneak’ into their heart causing them to be more miserable and angrier than ever and eventually swallowing them. At this juncture, the story broke free from the imminence, and brought a simple new perspective to the familiar Chinese customs during Chinese New Year.Xiong Liang’s illustration emphasizes on linework and the feel of the ink. The structure and language in this book are modern, concise and pure, yet having a unique sense of humour and poetic feel. The story can be easily understood by children and even readers of different culture, brilliant expressions of emotions.Want to know what happened to “Nian” and all the lonely souls?
