The above book is from series of books titled – “What is this” by Taro Gomi. I first got to know Taro Gomi books through the following series of three books that my husband bought for our children.
Thereafter, I’m always looking out for his books at the bookstore because I really enjoy the simple yet profound concept of his books. Coupled by the very appealing – simple and cute- illustration, his books are really the must-get for both yours and your children’s visual and reading diet.
“This is a Rope” brings to you and your child the possibilities of what a rope could be. All done with a story scenario of a sports event unfolding in the background. It is unlike the typical children’s vocabulary or word book that shows you both the image and the name of the item like those of a visual dictionary.
This book gives room for interaction with our children as the repetitive question – ” What kind of rope is this?” is asked along with a part of the illustration that would give clues to reveal the answer on the following page.
It helps to nurture the creative thinking of our children by posing the question, thus encouraging their brains to explore more on their observations and challenge their own assumptions. I think the page above which shows the 3-legged relay that reads “A rope that connects our hearts together.” is especially metaphorical as he suddenly transits from the seen functionality of a rope to the unseen functionality of a rope.

《这是绳子》探索了简单的绳子的用途。五味太郎巧妙地把这个简单的探索穿梭入一个运动会的场景， 使这本书读起来比较有趣味性，和比较普遍一般的孩童认知书大有不同。
这本绘本的形式是这样 — 五味太郎采用绘画给读者提示，反复的问道：“这是什么绳子” 。这非常有助于开发孩子的思维和想象力，也让亲子一块阅读绘本时，能有一些互动的机会。
我特别喜欢书里的一句 “是把心连在一起的绳子”。 我觉得这句子，帮读者开拓了看待绳子的角度 — 从一直用有形的绳子来思考它的用途，换成一种无形的比喻。 非常有意思！
