Top: “Dice the onions and slice the ham. Fry them together in the frying pan.” Rabbit Gu Gu said excitedly. Bottom: Oh I see how it is done now… Let me take a look. Oh! You did very well for this step. ” Fox Lele said.
Sizzle Sizzle….
“Adding some aromatic tomato sauce will make it even tastier.” Gu Gu said. “Now it’s finally my turn to pour in the rice!” Racoon Huan Huan said.
Let me do the most important task.” Fox Le Le mixed the eggs thoroughly and then poured the mixture slowly into the frying pan.
Fox Le Le spread the eggs out and made an omelette as round as the sun. “Gu Gu, please put the rice fried with eggs on top”
Piah! Roll it and flip it! The omu-rice is ready!
Left: ” This meal is fantastic!” “See you again!” Right: “You are too kind with your words. See you soon!” Chef Bear is coming back soon. Fox Le Le quickly gets started to clean out the kitchen. “If Chef Bear knows that I brought people into the kitchen to make meals, he would surely be very angry. I’m going make the kitchen sparkling clean to keep this secret.

This is a story of an apprentice cook who wished to learn culinary skills from a chef. He was tasked to prove his worth through kitchen cleaning. Meanwhile, as he was cleaning,he met his friends coincidentally as they came in to be the customers. Read about how he uses his quick wits (if you see it that way) to impress his friends and managed to learn something along the way, and also if he managed eventually to learn from the chef.

The highlight of this book is probably found in the handful of pages showing the sequence in which the ingredients for the omelette rice were being added. The pages can be made interactive in that children may pretend to be doing the cooking (on the page) while being read to.

There are also a few interesting discussion points that we can raise for our children while reading. For example, is it right for Lele to allow his friends into the kitchen? Is it right for him to pretend that he knows how to cook in front of his friends while he actually has not really started learning from Chef Bear? What would our children choose to do if they were also in the same circumstance as Fox Lele?

I think it is up to us as parents to guide our children to think, form opinions and shape their moral values as we read picture books with them, and not simply going along the flow of the book to agree with the actions of the characters full-fledge just because the main characters are doing them.
