The above book is from series of books titled – “What is this” by Taro Gomi. I first got to know Taro Gomi books through the following series of three books that my husband bought for our children.
Thereafter, I’m always looking out for his books at the bookstore because I really enjoy the simple yet profound concept of his books. Coupled by the very appealing – simple and cute- illustration, his books are really the must-get for both your children’s visual and reading diet and yours.
”This is a Box” challenges the imagination of the children by encouraging them to observe the illustration and the clues written along with it to guess the kind of box in question. I particularly like the two pages that revealed the fridge and the television because I find it humorous to use the response of the adults towards the two appliances, to bring about the familiarity of parent and child interaction at home. It shows that the author does know very well too what goes on in a family with parents and little children.
This book takes the understanding of the cuboid – a 3D shape to a greater level for children because it explores its many possibilities by simply changing the size (and perhaps colour). This book is different from other books that might otherwise, just introduce a variety of shapes and for the kid to name them.

之后，我凡是到书局都爱翻阅他的书， 因为我觉得他的书深入浅出。再加上简单可爱又贴切的绘画，让你在翻阅他的书时也得到一种视觉上的享受。
《这是盒子》运用简单的不同大小的长方体绘图和每一页的小提示鼓励孩子们动动脑筋，发挥想象力来猜测下一页的盒子到底是怎样的一个盒子。这是一本与众不同的形状认知书。
我特别喜欢”冰箱”和”电视机”那两页，因为里面那两句”是打开太久，会让爸妈生气的盒子” 和 ”这个盒子看的时间太久，也会让爸妈生气” 有趣轻松的带出父母和孩子们会经常产生的冲突。我想五味太郎应该是蛮了解有孩子的家庭里经常会发生的常景。我觉得能让读者在故事里看到自己或自己熟悉的能产生共鸣， 让孩子比较能理解接受一些现实生活中的不适或事情。
